prairie as Mary Malone had been sometime before.
The creatures rolled onto the surface and set off, soon picking up speed. The road was more like a watercourse than a highwayof the hard wheels on the hard stone. Lyra found it more difficult than Will at first, because she had never ridden a bicycle, and she didn't know the trick of leaning into the corner; but she saw how he was doing it, and soon she was finding the speed exhilarating.
The wheels made too much noise for them to speak. Instead, they had to point: at the trees, in amazement at their size and splendor; at a flock of birds, the strangest they had ever seen, their fore and aft wings giving them a twisting, screwing motion through . In places it broadened into wide areas like small lakes; and at others it split into narrow channels, only to combine again unpredictably. It was quite unlike the brutal, rational way roads in Will's world sliced through hillsides and leapt across valleys on bridges of concrete. This was part of the landscape, not an imposition on it.They were going faster and faster. It took Will and Lyra a while to get used to the living impulse of the muscles and the shuddering thunder

"Lee!" said Iorek. "Lee, my comrade, I have never seen this before. You are dead, what am I speaking to?"
"Iorek, old feller, you don't know the half of it. We'll take over now, the Specters aren't afraid of bears. Lyra, Will, come this way, and hold up that knife...”
The blue hawk couldn't dig their fingers into his fur, they had to grip the armor between their knees, and his hack was so broad that both of them kept slipping.
"Look!" cried Lyra, pointing up as another shell burst nearby.
A dozen witches were making rest of the bears were engaging with the strange cavalry, helped by the Gallivespians, whose stings enraged the horses. The lady on the blue hawk skimmed low and called: "Straight ahead now! Among the trees in the valley!"

"But it's hard to move if I can't hold on to things. I'm stiff, I've been sitting here for the best part of a day without moving, and you know I haven't got any weapons, because you searched me. Go and ask the President if it's really necessary of the wind, the engines turning over steadily to generate power for the lights, voices from somewhere nearby giving orders.
They moved down the gangway, Mrs. Coulter leaning heavily on the guard. She was speaking softly, and Lord Roke could just make out his reply.to manacle me. Am I going to try and run away in this wilderness?"Lord Roke was impervious to her charm, but interested in its effect on others. The guard was a young man; they should have sent a grizzled old warrior."Well," said the guard, "I'm sure you won't, ma'am, but I can't do what I en't been ordered to do. You see that, I'm sure. Please stand up, ma'am, and if you stumble, I'll catch hold of your arm."She stood up, and Lord Roke felt her move clumsily forward. She was the most graceful human the Gallivespian had ever seen; this clumsiness was feigned. As they reached the head of the gangway, Lord Roke felt her stumble and cry out in alarm, and felt the jar as the guard's arm caught her. He heard the change in the sounds around them, too; the howl

those great iron-hard seedpods.
She reached a comfortable spot where three branches forked, tied the rope securely, adjusted her harness, and rested.
Through the gaps in theEventually she was brought back to her normal state of mind by a cramp in her right ankle, which was resting awkwardly in the crook of the fork. She eased it away and turned her attention to the task, still dizzy from the sense of oceanic gladness that surrounded her.
She'd explained to the mulefa how she had to hold the sap-lacquer plates a hand span apart leaves, she could see the blue sea, clear and sparkling as far as the horizon; and in the other direction over her right shoulder, she could see the succession of low rises in the gold-brown prairie, laced across by the black highways. There was a light breeze, which lifted a faint scent out of the flowers and rustled the stiff leaves, and Mary imagined a huge, dim benevolence holding her up, like a pair of giant hands. As she lay in the fork of the great branches, she felt a kind of bliss she had only felt once before; and that was not when she made her vows as a nun.

wouldn't let a child of my own speak to me in the insolent, high-handed way you're speaking, Lyra, why I haven't punished you before...”
"Then go ahead! Punish me, since you can! Take your bloody spurs and dig 'em in hard, go on! Here's my hand, do it! You got no never understand that, for all your pride, for all your grown-up cleverness, and if I have to die to do what's proper, then I will, and be happy while I do. I seen worse than that. So if you want to kill me, you hard man, you strong man, you poison bearer, you Chevalier, you do it, go on, kill me. Then me and Roger can play in the land of the dead forever, and laugh at idea what's in my heart, you proud, selfish creature, you got no notion how I feel sad and wicked and sorry about my friend Roger, you kill people just like that,” she snapped her finger, "they don't matter to you, but it's a torment and a sorrow to me that I never said good-bye to him, and I want to say sorry and make it as good as I can, you'd

scale furnace, with the finest tools and equipment, could work on that blade; but now he saw that these were the finest tools, and that Iorek's artistry had constructed the best furnace there could be.
Iorek roared above the clangor, "Hold it still in your mind! You have to forge it, too! This is your task as much as mine!"
Will felt his whole being quiver the first one aside and placed a second on the spot to heat.
Will checked the fuel and snapped a branch in two to direct the flames better, and under the blows of the stone hammer in the bear's fist. The second piece of the blade was heating, too, and Lyra's leafy branch sent the hot gas along to bathe both pieces in its flow and keep out the iron-eating air. Will sensed it all and felt the atoms of the metal linking each to each across the fracture, forming new crystals again, strengthening and straightening themselves in the invisible lattice as the join came good."The edge!" roared Iorek. "Hold the edge in line!"He meant with your mind, and Will did it instantly, sensing the minute snags and then the minute easement as the edges lined up perfectly. Then that join was made, and Iorek turned to the next piece."A new stone," he called to Lyra, who knocked

Iorek Byrnison said nothing for a long time, but turned his head to look out at the darkness. Then he slowly got to his feet and stalked to the cave mouth, and looked up at the stars: some the same as those he knew, from the north, and some that were strange to him.
Behind him, Lyra turned the meat over on the fire, and Will looked at his wounds, to see how they were healing. Tialys and your instrument. Know what it is that you're asking. If you still want it then, I shall mend the knife."
At once Lyra took out the alethiometer and edged nearer to the fire so that she could see the face. The reading took her longer than usual, and when she blinked and sighed and came out of the trance, her face was troubled.
"I never known it so confused," she said. "There was lots of things it said. I think I got it clear. I think so. It said about balance first. It said the knife could be harmful or it Salmakia sat silent on their ledge. Then Iorek turned around."Very well, I shall do it on one condition," he said. "Though I feel it is a mistake. My people have no gods, no ghosts or daemons. We live and die and that is that. Human affairs bring us nothing but sorrow and trouble, but we have language and we make war and we use tools; maybe we should take sides. But full knowledge is better than half-knowledge. Lyra, read

The reaction from the bears was pure fury. At once the fire thrower was relit and hauled around to face the shore, and the mass of flame shot upward and then cascaded in a hundred spilling gouts over the rooftops. And at the top of the gangway appeared a hear larger than any of the others, an apparition of ironclad might, and the bullets that rained on him whined and clanged and thudded uselessly, unable to make the slightest dent in his massive armor.
Will said to the man beside him, "Why are they attacking the town?"not bears) leapt down to throw ropes around the bollards, and a great hiss and cry of anger rose from the townsfolk at these human traitors. The sailors took no notice, but ran to lower a gangplank. Then as they turned to go back on board, a shot was fired from somewhere near Will, and one of the sailors fell. , though when he took it off, he missed its cover, for his bare arms and neck were soon burning. He dropped cloak and rucksack and ran the last few yards to the water, to fall on his face and swallow mouthful after freezing mouthful. It was so cold that it made his teeth and skull ache.
Once he'd slaked the thirst, he sat up and looked around. He'd been in no condition to notice things the day before, but now he saw more clearly the intense color of the water, and heard the strident insect noises from all around.
"Balthamos?"
"Always here."
"Where is the dead man?"
"Beyond the high rock on your right."
"Are there any Specters insect scrapings only scratching at the surface of it. The tents were still, the water was placid, with the ripples still drifting slowly out from where he'd been drinking. A flicker of green movement near his foot made him start briefly, but it was only a tiny lizard.
The tents were made of camouflage material, which only made them stand out more among the dull red rocks. He looked in the first and found it empty. So was the second, but in the third he found something valuable: a mess tin and a box of matches. There was also a strip of some around?""No, none. I don't have anything the Specters want, and nor have you."Will took up his rucksack and cloak and made his way along the edge of the lake and up onto the rock Balthamos had pointed out.Beyond it a little camp had been set up, with five or six tents and the remains of cookin. Will moved down warily in case there was someone still alive and hiding. But the silence was profound, with the

Yes, there is someone else with me. But there is nothing to be afraid of. She is my daughter, and she is under a spell that made her fall asleep. We have come here to hide from the enchanter who put the spell on her, while I try to cure her and keep her from harm. Come and see her, if you like."
Ama was half-soothed by Mrs. Coulter's soft voice, and half-afraid still; and the talk of enchanters and spells added to the awe her hands were moving together in a repetitive gesture of finger on thumb, finger on thumb, to ward off danger by confusing the evil spirits.
"You see?" said Mrs. Coulter. "She can do no harm. There's nothing to be afraid of."
Ama looked at the figure in the sleeping bag. It was a girl older than she was, by three or four years, perhaps; and she had hair of a color Ama had never seen before, a tawny fairness like a lion's. Her lips were pressed tightly together, and she was deeply asleep, there was no doubt about that, for her daemon lay coiled and unconscious at her throat. He had the form she felt. But the golden monkey was holding her daemon so gently, and she was curious, besides, so she followed Mrs. Coulter into the cave. Her father, on the path below, took a step forward, and his crow daemon raised her wings once or twice, but he stayed where he was.Mrs. Coulter lit a candle, because the light was fading rapidly, and led Ama to the back of the cave. As people get older, hormonal and brain changes cause a shift in the body's internal clock, so they might find themselves sleepy very early in the evening. "This starts a vicious cycle," says Zafarlotfi. "If your parents go to bed at 8, they may rise at 3 get all 8 hours of sleep at one time — or, if they must take a nap, have them set an alarm so they sleep no more than 20 to 30 minutes. * Stick to light fare. Recent animal studies suggest that a high-fat diet can disrupt circadian rhythms. Though further research is needed, "greasy, heavy dinners and desserts may disrupt digestion, so you toss and turn," says Bae. * Turn up the light. Unlike teens, seniors may benefit from bright light exposure or 4 in the morning. Then they take long naps. So when bedtime rolls around, they're not tired enough to doze off, which deprives them of deep sleep."To help your parents snooze on schedule, suggest that they:* Skip catnaps. Our friend was rather tired and was beginning to feel bored, when his attention was suddenly aroused by hearing a Child's voice calling him: "Tyltyl! . . Tyltyl!... How are you, Tyltyl, how are you?...." A little Blue Child came running up from the back of the hall, pushing his way through the crowd. He was fair and slim and bright-eyed and had a great look of Mytyl. "How do you know my name?" asked Tyltyl. "It's not surprising," said the Blue Child, "considering that I shall be your brother!" "Here we are!" cried the boy in triumph, as, climbing up on a root, he read:

And, sure enough, the mist parted before their eyes, like veils torn by an invisible hand; the big trees faded away, everything vanished and, instead, there appeared a pretty little peasant's cottage, covered with creepers and standing in aflowers and with trees all over fruit. They had arrived; but they turned to every side without seeing a thing: "I can see nothing at all!" whimpered Mytyl. "I'm cold!... I'm tired!… I don't want to travel any more!" Tyltyl, who was wholly wrapped up in his errand, lost his temper: "Come, don't keep on crying just like Water!... You ought to be ashamed of yourself!" he said. "There! Look! Look! Swatland Afternoon on the Terrace

few years ago, I reconnected with my lost female best friend. We reconnected but it wasn’t the same. I attended her bridal shower and marriage and saw that she had a lot of close female friends. I realized that she was a lot better at keeping in touch with people than I could ever be. I got married in my late twenties, and had no real girlfriend to speak with on the joys or still kept in touch but it was sporadic for the most part.
Now here’s the thing … I’m happily married to my hubby, who is my best friend. I have two wonderful, sometimes crazy, babies. I have a job I’m happy with it, and a body that I’ve come to love. So why is it that I still have this feeling of a missing piece when I think of women out there with a close knit circle of girlfriends that you can call or see anytime for no reason other than to be in each others company?
I feel like it’s my fault because I just don’t or can’t pick up the phone and dial, or meet up with people. A lot of this is due to time constraints on my
