'Sir,' said Mr. Littimer, without looking up, 'if my eyes have not deceived me, there is a gentleman present who was acquainted with me in my former life. It may be profitable to that gentleman to know, sir, that I attribute my past follies, entirely to having lived a thoughtless life in the service of young men; and to having allowed myself to be led by them into weaknesses, which I had not the strength to resist. I hope that gentleman will take warning, sir, and will not be offended at my freedom. It is for his good. I am conscious of my own past follies. I hope he may repent of all the wickedness and sin to which he has been a party.' ¡¡
¡¡I observed that several gentlemen were shading their eyes, each with one hand, as if they had just come into church. ¡¡¡¡'This does you credit, Twenty Eight,' returned the questioner. 'I should have expected it of you. Is there anything else?' ¡¡¡¡'Sir,' returned Mr. Littimer, slightly lifting up his eyebrows, but not his eyes, 'there was a young woman who fell into dissolute courses, that I endeavoured to save

'I should like to go with you,' was all she said. ¡¡¡¡'It would be better if you remained. You have had enough of hardship. It is a miracle that you have survived. And it won't be comfortable in the boat, rowing and sailing in this rainy weather. What you need is rest, and I should like you to remain and get it.' ¡¡¡¡Something suspiciously akin to moistness dimmed her beautiful eyes before she dropped them and partly turned away her head. ¡¡¡¡'I should prefer going with you,' she said in a low voice, in which there was just a hint of appeal. ¡¡¡¡'I might be able to help you a-' her voice broke- 'a little. And if anything should happen to you,
think of me left here alone.' ¡¡¡¡'Oh, I intend being very careful,' I answered. 'And I shall not go so far but what I can get back before night. Yes, all said and done, I think it vastly better for you to remain and sleep and rest and do nothing.' ¡¡¡¡She turned and looked me in the eyes. Her gaze was soft but unfaltering. ¡¡¡¡'Please, please!' she said very softly.

were being repaired and new sails made and bent. Also, a new galley was being constructed out of odds and ends of lumber from the hold. Sealing-schooner after sealing-schooner we sighted and boarded, most of which were in search of lost boats, and most of which were carrying boats and crews that they had picked up and that did not belong to them. For the thick of the fleet had been to the westward of us, and the boats, scattered far and wide, had headed in mad flight for the nearest refuge. ¡¡¡¡Two of our boats, with men all safe, we took off the Cisco, and, to Wolf Larsen's huge delight and my own grief, he culled Smoke, with Nilson and Leach, from the San Diego. So that, at the end of five days, we found ourselves short but four men, Henderson, Holyoak, Williams, and Kelly, and were once more hunting on the flanks of the herd. ¡¡¡¡As we followed north, we began to encounter the dreaded sea-fogs. Day after day the boats were lowered and swallowed up almost before they touched the water, while we on board pumped the horn at regular intervals, and every fifteen minutes fired the bomb-gun. Boats were continually being lost and found, it being the

'But history tells of slaves who rose to the purple,' I chided. ¡¡¡¡'And history tells of opportunities that came to the slaves who rose to the purple,' he answered grimly. 'No man makes opportunity. All the great men ever did was to know it when it came to them. The Corsican knew. I have dreamed as greatly as the Corsican. I should have known the opportunity, but it never came. The thorns sprung up and choked me. And, Hump, I can tell you that you know more about me than any living man except my own brother.' ¡¡¡¡'And what is he? And where is he?' ¡¡¡¡'Master of the steamship Macedonia, seal-hunter,' was the answer. 'We will meet him most probably on the Japan coast. Men call him "Death" Larsen.' ¡¡¡¡'Death Larsen!' I involuntarily cried. 'Is he like you?' ¡¡¡¡'Hardly. He is a lump of an animal without any head. He has all my- my-' ¡¡¡¡'Brutishness,' I suggested.

where it had been abandoned. Nothing was to be seen of the strange steamboat which had caused the disaster, though I heard men saying that she would undoubtedly send boats to our assistance. ¡¡¡¡I descended to the lower deck. The Martinez was sinking fast, for the water was very near. Numbers of the passengers were leaping overboard. Others, in the water, were clamoring to be taken aboard again. No one heeded them. A cry arose that we were sinking. I was seized by the consequent panic, and went over the side in a surge of bodies. How I went over I do not know, though I did know, and instantly, why those in the water were so desirous of getting back on the steamer. The water was cold- so cold that it was painful. The pang, as I plunged into it, was as quick and sharp as that of fire. It bit to the marrow. It was like the grip of death. I gasped with the anguish and shock of it, filling my lungs before the life-preserver popped me to the surface. The taste of the salt was strong in my mouth, and I was strangling with the acrid stuff in my throat and lungs

¡¡¡¡`Don't look at me like that!' he said abruptly. ¡¡¡¡Tess, who had been quite unconscious of her action and mien, instantly withdrew the large dark gaze of her eyes, stammering with a flush, `I beg your pardon!' And there was revived in her the wretched sentiment which had often come to her before, that in inhabiting the fleshly tabernacle with which nature had endowed her she was somehow doing wrong. ¡¡¡¡`No, no! Don't beg my pardon. But since you wear a veil to hide your good looks, why don't you keep it down?' ¡¡¡¡She pulled down the veil, saying hastily, `It was mostly to keep off the wind.' ¡¡¡¡`It may seem harsh of me to dictate like this,' he went on; `but it is better that I should not look too often on you. It might be dangerous.' ¡¡¡¡`Ssh!' said Tess. ¡¡¡¡`Well, women's faces have had too much power over me already for me not to fear them! An evangelist has nothing to do with such as they; and it reminds me of the old times that I would forget!' ¡¡¡¡After this their conversation dwindled to a casual remark now and then as they rambled onward, Tess inwardly wondering how far he was going with her, and not

stones hurt her, and chilled her to the bone; but Clare was in his woollen stockings, and appeared to feel no discomfort. ¡¡¡¡There was no further difficulty. She induced him to lie down on his own sofa bed, and covered him up warmly, lighting a temporary fire of wood, to dry any dampness out of him. The noise of these attentions she thought might awaken him, and secretly wished that they might. But the exhaustion of his mind and body was such that he remained undisturbed. ¡¡¡¡As soon as they met the next morning Tess divined that Angel knew little or nothing of how far she had been concerned in the night's excursion, though, as regarded himself he may have been aware that he had not lain still. In truth, he had awakened that morning from a sleep deep as annihilation; and during those first few moments in which the brain, like a Samson shaking himself, is trying its strength, he had some dim notion of an unusual nocturnal proceeding. But the realities of his situation soon displaced conjecture on the other subject.

It was no mature woman with a long dark vista of intrigue behind her who was tormented thus; but a girl of simple life, not yet one-and-twenty, who had been caught during her days of immaturity like a bird in a springe. To calm herself the more completely she rose from her little stool and left the room, overturning the stool with her skirts as she went. ¡¡¡¡He sat on by the cheerful firelight thrown from a bundle of green ash-sticks laid across the dogs; the sticks snapped pleasantly, and hissed out bubbles of sap from their ends. When she came back she was herself again. ¡¡¡¡`Do you not think you are just a wee bit capricious, fitful, Tess?' he said, good humouredly, as he spread a cushion for her on the stool, and seated himself in the settle beside her. `I wanted to ask you something, and just then you ran away.' ¡¡¡¡`Yes, perhaps I am capricious,' she murmured. She suddenly approached him, and put a hand upon each of his arms. `No, Angel, I am not really so - by Nature, I mean!' The more particularly to assure him that she was not, she placed herself close to him in the settle, and allowed her head to find a resting-place against Clare's shoulder. `What did you want to ask me - I am sure I will answer it,' she continued humbly.

No,' said she; and taking her basket Tess trudged on. A little way forward she turned her head. The old gray wall began to advertise a similar fiery lettering to the first, with a strange and unwonted mien, as if distressed at duties it had never before been called upon to perform. It was with a sudden flush that she read and realized what was to be the inscription he was now half-way through--
THOU, SHALT, NOT, COMMIT -Her cheerful friend saw her looking, stopped his brush, and shouted-- ¡¡¡¡`If you want to ask for edification on these things of moment, there's a very earnest good man going to preach a charity-sermon to-day in the parish you are going to - Mr Clare of Emminster. I'm not of his persuasion now, but he's a good man, and he'll expound as well as any parson I know. 'Twas he began the work in me.'

Well," saidChief-Inspector Davy, "I don'tthink it does seem very likely that a young man such as you describe would really poisonchocolates and send them to you."
"Well, I don't thinkso really either," said Elvira, "butit must have been him because I can't see that there's anyone else. It worried me. And then, when I came back here, I got a note –”She stopped.
  "What sort of a note?"
"It just came in an envelope and was printed. Itsaid 'Be on your guard. Somebody wants to kill you'."
  Chief-Inspector Davy'seyebrows went up.
"Indeed? Very curious. Yes, very curious. And itworried you. You were frightened?"
"Yes. I began to – towonder who could possibly want me out of the way. That's why Itried to find out if I was really very rich."
